2010 Honda Insight Hybrid – Honda Motor Co. selling the 2010 Honda Insight hybrid in Japan starting at ¥1,890,000 (~US$21,100)-the cheapest hybrid cars. The 2010 Honda Insight hybrid utilizing the fifth generation of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology and new, more cost-efficient production methods, the 2010 Honda Insight hybrid offers an estimated EPA city/highway/combined fuel-economy rating of 40/43/41 miles per gallon US. Honda projects that the 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid will carry a CARB AT-PZEV emission rating.

Evoking the aerodynamic five-door sedan design first deployed on the FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid has a low center of gravity and seats five.

2010 Honda Insight Hybrid combines a 1.3-liter SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC engine and CVT, with a new generation of Honda’s IMA hybrid system. The Insight’s IMA system includes a 10 kW (13 hp) electric motor that delivers 68 lb-ft (92 Nm) of torque and a compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) consisting of a 5.75 Ah, 100.8V NiMH battery pack, Power Control Unit (PCU), motor Electric Control Unit (ECU), and cooling system.

Combined output and overall torque of the engine and motor is 98 hp (73 kW) @ 5,800 rpm, with max torque of 123 lb-ft (167 Nm) @ 1,000-1,500 rpm.To further support fuel-efficient driving, the Insight features the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist) as standard equipment on all models.

The strength of the Insight is the value it brings because of its pricing.  And as the cheapest hybrid, Honda may take over the hybrid car market.

The 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid car made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January and goes on sale in the US in April 2009.

Because it’s a hybrid you can drive all round inner city London and Boris Johnson won’t ask for a penny. This technology is exempt from paying congestion charges and with these low emissions it will only cost you £15 a year in car tax.

Affordable Hybrid: What Else?

So all the stats look good and the sums definitely add up so what else does it have to offer?

Not only is this car capable of these economic driving figures but it will also help you learn how to drive more economically. The lighting behind the screen glows a friendly green whilst the car is being driven economically, however it will turn a guilty blue when you begin putting your foot down too hard.

Your journey is also rated and it will give you a score in number of trees depending on how well you performed.

Not only is this a rather trim spec on the inside but the aerodynamic shape of the car gives it a futuristic, distinct look that sets it aside from others on the road. It also functions well as a practical, usable family with a large boot and spacious 60/40 split seats.

On the down side once this car leave the safety of the urban environment it lacks power. Whats more it will tell you off for trying to use any. Those who don’t like being told what to do may find the concept of a Japanese computer programmer telling them how to drive off putting.

Commenting on the debut of the Insight, Ken Keir, Managing Director of Honda (UK) said that this is the first time that Honda Hybrid technology has been available in a five-seat, five door car but at an affordable hybrid price. Beside that, by combining an electric motor with a highly efficient petrol engine, the Honda Insight offers drivers not only low CO2 emissions, but also very low emissions of other greenhouse gasses like N2O.

With the introduction of cheap hybrid cars the overall costs of a hybrid can bring it into line with non-hybrid vehicles that are demonstrating vastly improved gas mileage.

The technology is in place for hybrid vehicle operation and many claim that cheap hybrid cars are in the future. As newer technology is developed to provide a seamless transition from gas to electric motors in the vehicles, production costs will decline, accompanied by the overall costs.

However, as consumers show reluctance to give up the luxury of the larger vehicles to which they become accustomed, the market for cheap hybrid cars that are currently considerably smaller, may not be what companies need to benefit from their development.
