Hybrid Sport Cars – In January 2010, Michael Macht, the CEO of Porsche, stating that the German cars will not offer a hybrid version of the 911 and Boxster, denied the rumors otherwise. Although the company has announced that they will produce hybrid sport car versions of the new Cayenne SUV, Macht reject the idea of giving a sports car that gasoline-electric powertrain. He said Porsche’s sports cars are generally not encouraged in the city, which is where hybrids are most reasonable.

Porsche’s U-Turn: Hybrid Sport Cars Coming After All

Monday, the German car maker turned the U-turn when the development of Porsche’s head, Wolfgang Duerheimer, said in an interview with the trade publication Automotive News Europe, “In the future, we will have hybrid drives in every model line.” He also stated that in future even the flagship 911 hybrid sport car will be available with hybrid drive and may only be offered with four-cylinder engine – hybrid sport car.

The company recently launched a hybrid version of the Cayenne and Panamera sedan next year will be sold with the Cayenne’s hybrid technology. Hybrid Panamera will be able to travel about three to four miles under electric power according to Heinz-Jakob Neusser, who led development of the Porsche drivetrain.

In July, the Board of Trustees at the Porsche gave the green light on the development of 918 Spyder, a 718-horsepower all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid sport car with a claimed 3.2-second 0-62 mph speed and outstanding fuel economy . Expected in early 2012, Porsche has claimed nearly 900 potential buyers have signed up for hybrid Spyder, only 100 less than the car manufacturers say is needed for it to produce cars.
