Hyundai Company its own home-based hybrid architecture for utilize in the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai initiate a parallel hybrid system which will provide as the foundation for future hybrid drive vehicles. In a parallel hybrid system, the wheels are turned on by power coming directly from the electric motor, the gasoline engine, or both together, as situation require. This design is similar to the design used by Ford and Toyota.

Hyundai utilize a lithium polymer battery system which provided from LG Chem, Hyundai’s battery supplier. This lithium batteries distribute the ‘matching’ power as nowadays’ hybrid nickel metal hybride batteries – but with 50 percent less volume, 30 percent less weight and 10 percent greater efficiency.

In spite of industry concerns about the availability of lithium batteries and of course the price, John Krafcik, president of Hyundai Motor America said that to make the move to lithium it was not a hard decision. John Krafcik also said that Hyundai Company is belatedly to the hybrid market – the Hyundai Sonata is about 2 years ‘missing’ from dealerships – and Hyundai Company has a great desire – with its first hybrid entry to demonstrate a leadership position in hybrid car category. John Krafcik predicted where the technology is going to be in 5 years and he also assumes how the company can get to that end point in front of time.

Actually, nobody knows where fuel prices will be in two or three year later, when Hyundai ready with its Sonata, but Hyundai Sonata Hybrid could match the fuel economy ratings of the most efficient family sedans on the market – for thousands of dollars below the competition.
