One of the biggest risks of purchasing a used automobile is that you may end up spending more on its maintenance than you would on purchasing a new car.
So, it is important to be prepared when you decide to purchase a used automobile. Research each car you want to purchase. Study car reviews and consumers reports. Before buying, check out all your options and the history records of the car. You must perform a thorough inspection of the used automobiles you plan to buy before making the purchase. Obama Proposes Rules For Automakers to Meet 35.5 MPG: Barack Obama, the President of United State announced new tougher fuel economy standards to take effect in 2012 in May. His administration released the proposed 1,227-page set of regulations for implementing the standards this week, which require cars to average 35.5 mpg by 2016.
The regulations clearly state that auto companies can meet the new standards largely by using existing technologies. These improvements including the engines, transmissioans, and tires; improvements in air-conditioning system; increased use of start-stop technology; increased use of hybrid and other advanced technologies; and the initial commercialization of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
As usual, the devil is in the details. For instance:
- Automakers would be allowed to ‘carry on’ building and importing all classes of vehicles, from the smallest sub-compacts to the largest SUVs.
- Under the regulations, carmakers will continue to be able to claim mpg credits-amounting to a reduction of 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon if fully employed-by selling so-called flex-fuel vehicles capable of using a blend of ethanol and gasoline.
- Automakers advertising less than 400,000 vehicles in the US-including BMW, Mercedes, Subaru and Volkswagen-would be allowed to meet a weaker standard.
The regulations now go through a 60-day public comment period. The US Chamber of Commerce and a group of automakers are predicted to challenge the rules in court.

But before we make decisions, here are some questions to ask before purchasing new hybrid vehicles:
Is it fuel efficient?
What is the average range that the electric motor can cover before the gasoline engine kicks in? Does it have idle-off capability? Check the gas mileage and engine size to determine if the hybrid vehicle you are getting can truly help you save more. Some hybrid vehicles are very mild in which a minor technology may only be incorporated. Saving even 1 to 2 gallons of fuel per day can be more cost-effective enough.
Is it environmentally friendly?
Check the emission of the vehicle. Hybrids should have very low or zero emission which minimizes the risk of exhausting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Find out the electric motor capabilities since these are the times when gasoline byproducts are prevented and reduced. There are many resources available to reduce pollution such as fuel cells, hydrogen and electricity. Find out if any of these are incorporated in your vehicle.
What are its other features?
Check the interior and exterior of the hybrid vehicle just as you would when buying a conventional one. Determine if the size is right for your or your family, determine the quality of the materials used if the overall structure is safe for highway driving and compare the advantages and key features with other models. Some hybrids do not look as stylish as a gas model but there are also hybrids that look exactly like their conventional counterparts.
How much is it?
The initial sum of purchasing new hybrid vehicles is usually higher compared to conventional cars. However, you will discover that you can easily make up for the initial cost by saving more on fuel. Again, you need to check the mileage, rate of consumption and possible tax deductions to see if the hybrid can really be cost-effective in the years to come. Also consider repair and maintenance expenses in the future.
