Nowadays the sign that plug-in hybrid cars and information networks are merging, GMs last days unveiled a downloadable application that will let Chevy Volt users use a iPhone, Blackberry or Motorola Droid to remotely control and monitor vehicle charging and its other functions. General Motors demonstrated this smartphone application at the glitzy International Consumer Electronics Show or ILES in Las Vegas.

As the driver, you will be able to use the smartphone application for various functions, such as:

• Scheduling or initiating charging, and displaying charge level or status

• Sending text messages to remind users or consumers to plug in their vehicles

• Warming up or cooling the vehicle before getting in

• Getting status reports, such as how much electric driving range is available

• Showing MPG or miles per gallon, Electric Vehicles miles and miles driven for last trip and lifetime

As the drivers, you can also view and manage vehicle systems and commands from the vehicle, through OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics email or the Internet.

Conventional OnStar features is like a door lock, remote horn and unlock and lights – typically accessible just through a call to an OnStar customer service or center – will be available via the application. The Chevy Volt Smartphone Application communicates with the OnStar servers, which are the intermediary between the vehicle and the application.

Some like this smartphone application and remoter charging controls, are expected from Nissan and Toyota with their all-electric Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius. Last year, Ford introduced on an intelligent system for drivers to manage charging of its planned electric and plug-in hybrid cars. This system whas established in 20 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid demo vehicles.
