Subaru, the Japan based automaker, announced its intentions to produce the first Subaru hybrid gas electric vehicle in May 2012. Ikuo Mori, the president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Subaru cars, told us in the Tokyo Motor Show, that the company has a planning in hybrid. Ikuo Mori saying that a hybrid would help Subaru meet tougher United State fuel economy rules.
Ikuo Mori did not specify told us which model would use a hybrid drivetrain, but he suggested it would be a smaller one. Subaru hybrid will lean on Toyota Company, but Subaru will develop its own unique hybrid system. When Automotive News interview Mori, Mori said that it’s impossible to simply transplant Toyota hybrid system into a Subaru hybrid vehicle, need more research to match it with Subaru platforms. Mori also explained to us that the company will introduce the hybrid in an existing model – not creating a dedicated hybrid only vehicle.
The president of Fuji Heavy believes that it’s critical to maintain a Subaru’s ‘distinctive performance’ and all wheel drive with the forthcoming hybrid. Ikuo Mori expressed that the Subaru has concern to meet long range emissions regulations with its current gasoline engines. So the company will not introduce something just for the sake of having green technology. He said, “We need a hybrid system.”
